First expand the expression

5−25+2=55+52−25−22=55−22.

Because 5  and 2  are defined as those numbers which, when multiplied with themselves give 5 and 2 respectively, we have that

55−22=5−2=3. 


Note: The expansion of 5−25+2  can also be done directly with the formula for difference of two squares (a−b)(a+b)=a2−b2 using a=5  and b=2 .
