Current revision

When the factor xy is multiplied by the expression inside the brackets, 1+x+x2, the distributive rule gives that all three terms 1, x and −x2 are multiplied by xy,

(1+x−x2)=1xy+xxy−x2xy=xy+x2y−x3y.
