We can work out the length we are looking for by taking the difference a−b of the sides a and b in the triangles below.

If we take the tangent of the given angle in each triangle, we easily obtain a and b.

	a=1tan60=sin60cos60=2123=3
	b=1tan45=sin45cos45=1212=1

Hence,

x=a−b=3−1.
